Afsoon Roshanzamir is the first US medalist in women's freestyle wrestling, born in Iran and trained in wrestling by her father despite it being a male-dominated sport.

She made history when she became the first US medalist at the Women's World Championships in 1989, followed by a silver medal in 1990. Roshanzamir competed for a decade and won several national and international titles.

She currently serves in the women's freestyle program as a coach and in a medical capacity. In 2014, Johnston was one of the U.S. Women’s World Team coaches who helped lead the team to a third place finish.
